GEO’FUSION READY TO REPEAT HISTORY AT MERDEKA RACE
Spurred by the success of the TVR Chimaera in 2001, the Geo’Fusion Racing Team believes that it could make similar impact at the 2004 Merdeka Millennium Endurance at Sepang Circuit on August 28. Speaking at the official launch of the team at Sepang Circuit today, team principal Datuk Zawawi Ismail declared that the Geo’Fusion Racing Team had the power and capability to win the 12-hour endurance race. “If we go back to history, the second Merdeka Millennium Endurance race in 2001 was won by a TVR Chimaera. In fact, in the first year itself, TVR was unfortunate to finish second overall. “So, in the TVR Chimaera machine that our drivers would be using in this year’s race, it had the track record that it has the capability to last the grueling 12 hours of non-stop racing and the power to be among the front-runners,†he said in his speech. With a top speed of up to 260 kilometers per hour, the lightweight 980-kg racing machine has an engine capacity 400bhp. Their challenge in the fifth edition of the Merdeka Millennium Endurance race would be carried by an experienced drivers’ line-up of Datuk Vincent Leong, Asrul Azam Ali and Rocky Siow behind the wheel. The official launch of the Geo’Fusion Racing Team was officiated by former senior Cabinet Minister Tan Sri Dato’ Mohd Ghazali Shafie, who is chairman of Geo’Fusion, a multi-activity group of companies. Datuk Zawawi said : “While we recognize the quality of the competition and our spirit of participation for the event, I would, however, not be surprised at all if the team finishes the 12-hour race on August 28 as among the podium winners. Even, as the overall winners. “It’s simply because in the Geo’Fusion Racing Team, we believed that we have the machine, the drivers, the team to do well in this race,†he added. Datuk Zawawi also said that the Geo’Fusion Racing Team was honoured to participate in the race as part of its national duty in support of development of motorsports in Malaysia. Introduced at the turn of the millennium and a brainchild of former SIC chairman Tan Sri Basir Ismail, the Merdeka Millennium Endurance race was created to provide an opportunity for local drivers to race professionally and against the best in the region. It was also organized as part of the National Day programmes as SIC believes that corporate companies should take the leading role in organizing events in celebrating Merdeka as a show of patriotism to the nation. |
